Alaska has a way of making people reach for language that feels inadequate. John Muir wrote about it obsessively. Jack London built a career on it. Jon Krakauer followed a young man into it and wrote one of the most read books in American literature. Photographers, politicians, adventurers, and comedians have all tried to capture what makes Alaska different from everywhere else.
Some of them got close. Here are 100 of the best attempts.
A Quick Note
I’ve spent over a decade working in Alaska for networks like National Geographic, Discovery, and Disney. I have filmed above the Arctic circle in the dead of winter, on fishing boats in Southeast, gold mines in Nome, crab boats in the Bering Sea, and in villages so remote the only way in was a bush plane. I’ve been lucky enough to see and experience more of Alaska than most Alaskans. I’ve seen what this country can do people, and I’ve felt it change myself.
“Alaska will change you. It murders the polite version you have of yourself in your head. It brings your raw self to the surface, for better or worse.” – JJ Krehbiel
