Fairbanks Airport Restaurants: Where to Eat at FAI

Fair warning, Fairbanks International Airport (FAI) is not a dining destination. It’s a small regional airport serving a city of 32,000 people, and the food options inside reflect that reality. There’s one sit-down restaurant inside security, a coffee shop, and a gift shop. That’s about it.

The good news: Fairbanks has genuinely good restaurants within 5-10 minutes of the airport, and since FAI is small enough that you don’t need to arrive two hours early, you have time to eat somewhere worth eating before you fly. This guide covers both, what’s actually inside FAI and where to go if you have time before or after your flight.

My Experience with Fairbanks Airport Restaurants

While working on Life Below Zero, Fairbanks was a bit of a hub for any shoot in the Interior of Alaska. I often filmed Sue Aikens near Chena Hot Springs, or caught a connecting flight to her camp in Kavik on the North Slope. Those shoots always started and ended at FAI.

Going in, Pike’s Landing or HooDoo Brewing was usually the last real meal before the wilderness swallowed us for the next few weeks. We’d sort of treat it like a ritual. Order something expensive. Eat slowly. Wash it down with a bunch of beer or wine. Because where we were going, there are no restaurants.

Coming out was always a happier story. By the time we would arrive back in Fairbanks I’d been living in a tent in subzero temperatures for two or three weeks, running on dehydrated food and camp stove coffee. The first thing I wanted wasn’t a hotel, it was a bar stool at The Local and something hot that someone else cooked. A real drink, real food, and somewhere between the third beer and the fourth I would remember that civilization exists and I’m allowed back in it. Hallelujah

Inside FAI Airport

Inside FAI
FAI

The Local @ FAI

The only full sit-down restaurant inside FAI, and genuinely better than you’d expect for a small Alaska airport. The Local uses locally sourced Alaska ingredients alongside standard airport fare. I’ve had an embarrassing amount of adult beverages at this bar.

The menu won’t surprise you, but it’ll satiate you. Breakfast sandwiches, omelets, and skillets in the morning, then flatbread pizzas, salads, beef brisket and turkey sliders, and burgers through the day. The Country Burger with pulled pork, cheddar, and slaw is worth noting.

Grab-and-go baked goods are available for early morning travelers who don’t want a full sit-down meal. Full bar open all day, thank god.

Hours: 6:00am — 1:00am daily
Phone: (907) 223-0445
Location: Inside security, upper level — past the checkpoint, can’t miss it

North Pole Coffee

Alaska’s own North Pole Coffee has been roasting small batches since 1992 and their FAI location is a worthy fueling station. Open early, 4:30am, which makes it the right move before an early morning departure when The Local hasn’t opened yet. Full espresso menu, Alaska-roasted beans.

Hours: 4:30am — 10:30pm daily
Phone: (907) 488-7190

Location: Inside the terminal

TWIGS Alaskan Gifts

Not a restaurant but worth knowing about. TWIGS carries snacks, magazines, books, and convenience items alongside Alaskan-made gifts and jewelry. Two locations: inside security on the upper level (open 5am-1am daily) and a first floor non-secure store (Mon-Fri 10am-7pm).

Good for grab-and-go snacks if you missed a meal.

Best Restaurants Near Fairbanks Airport

A quick note on geography — Fairbanks spreads out and “near the airport” means something specific here. Airport Way runs directly from FAI into town and has the most convenient options for travelers with limited time. Here’s the honest breakdown by distance:

On Airport Way — 5 Minutes or Less

Pike’s Landing

By far the best restaurant near FAI. Pike’s Landing sits right on Airport Way — literally three minutes from the terminal — on the banks of the Chena River. Locally owned since 1969, chef-operated, with an outdoor deck that seats 300 people in summer, six fire pits, and a wood burning fireplace inside for winter. The menu covers burgers, salads, seafood, and steaks. This is where you eat before a big Alaska trip or decompress after surviving one. If you have an hour before your flight, Pike’s is the answer.

East Ramp Pizza

East Ramp is one of the best restaurants near FAI and it’s literally on the airport property — on the general aviation side with direct views of the runways. Wood-fired Neapolitan-style pizzas made with Italian flour, Caputo tomatoes, and Grande cheese, watched from repurposed airliner seats while planes taxi past the windows. Named best pizza in Fairbanks by the local paper. The aviation theme carries through everything — propellers on the walls, runway views, a community of regulars who know the staff by name. Open for lunch which makes it the right call before an afternoon flight.

Denny’s

Not glamorous — but Denny’s on Airport Way earns its place on this list for one reason: it’s one of the few options near FAI open late night and early morning. If you’re landing at midnight or catching a 5am flight and The Local isn’t cutting it, Denny’s is there. Consistent, predictable, exactly what you’d expect.

Safeway

Technically a grocery store but worth knowing about — the Safeway on Airport Way is open 24 hours and has a solid grab-and-go deli section. Sandwiches, salads, hot food, coffee. If you’re self-catering a remote shoot or need supplies before heading north, this is your stop. Also the most practical option for very early morning departures when everything else is closed.

Worth the Short Drive — 10-15 Minutes

These aren’t walking distance from FAI but they’re close enough that if you have time before a flight or just landed and want a proper meal, they’re worth the drive.

Pike’s Waterfront Lodge — Aurora Restaurant

Connected to the Pike’s Landing complex on the Chena River, the Aurora Restaurant at Pike’s Waterfront Lodge offers a slightly more formal dining room alongside the same great river views. Worth knowing about if the main Pike’s Landing deck is packed during peak season.

ADDRESS: 1850 Hoselton Rd, Fairbanks, AK 99709 PHONE: (907) 479-6500

The Pump House Restaurant

A historic steam-powered water pump station from the gold rush era converted into one of Fairbanks’ most atmospheric restaurants. Right on the Chena River, upscale menu leaning toward Alaskan seafood, prime rib, and steaks. About 10 minutes from FAI. Worth it for a special occasion meal or if you have a longer layover.

ADDRESS: 796 Chena Pump Rd, Fairbanks, AK 99709 PHONE: (907) 479-8452

HooDoo Brewing Company

If your priorities are right and you have 90 minutes before your flight, HooDoo is 10 minutes from FAI and is one of the best breweries in Alaska. Rotating food trucks, outdoor fire pits, and genuinely excellent beer. See our Fairbanks Breweries guide for everything else worth drinking in town.

Fairbanks Airport Restaurants FAQs

Is there food inside Fairbanks Airport?

Yes. The Local @ FAI is the only sit-down restaurant inside security. It’s located on the second floor past the security checkpoint and serves breakfast until 9:30am, then transitions to lunch and dinner with a full bar open all day. There’s also a small coffee kiosk on the non-secure side of the terminal.

What is The Local @ FAI?

The Local is a regional dining concept operated by HMSHost specifically for airports. At FAI it features locally sourced Alaska ingredients alongside standard airport fare. Standout items include Bavarian pretzels with cheese fondue, Dirty Chips, and a solid burger. The full bar is the most important feature — especially for early morning flights when the bar is open before the rest of Fairbanks wakes up.

How far is Fairbanks Airport from downtown?

About 5 miles — roughly 10-15 minutes depending on traffic. Fairbanks doesn’t have significant traffic by most city standards so the drive is quick and reliable.

What is the best restaurant near Fairbanks Airport?

Pike’s Landing is the consensus answer — locally owned since 1969, right on the Chena River, excellent burgers and seafood, massive outdoor deck with fire pits in summer. About 8 minutes from FAI. The Pump House is the more upscale option for a special occasion meal.

Is there a good place to eat near Fairbanks Airport before an early morning flight?

The Local @ FAI opens early and serves breakfast until 9:30am inside security. Outside the airport, most Fairbanks restaurants don’t open early — Pike’s Landing is one of the earlier options. If you need coffee before security, the airport coffee kiosk is your best bet.

Can I get a beer near Fairbanks Airport before my flight?

Yes. HooDoo Brewing is 10 minutes from FAI and is one of the best breweries in Alaska. The Local @ FAI also has a full bar inside security. If you’re connecting through Fairbanks with time to kill, HooDoo is a significantly better use of that time than the airport.

Is there a brewery near Fairbanks Airport?

HooDoo Brewing Company is about 10 minutes from FAI and is the most popular brewery in Fairbanks. See our complete Fairbanks breweries guide for all five breweries, three distilleries, and what to order at each.

What restaurants are open late near Fairbanks Airport?

Pike’s Landing and several downtown Fairbanks restaurants stay open into the evening. Check Google for current hours as late-night options in Fairbanks are limited. The bar at The Local @ FAI stays open until the last flight.

Are there any 24 hour restaurants near Fairbanks Airport?

Limited options. Fairbanks is a small city and 24-hour dining is rare. Denny’s and a few fast food options near the airport area cover late-night needs but for quality food you’re working within standard restaurant hours.

What should I do if I have a long layover in Fairbanks?

Head into town. Fairbanks is 10-15 minutes from FAI and offers genuinely interesting things to do — HooDoo Brewing for a beer, Pike’s Landing for a meal on the river, the University of Alaska Museum of the North for one of the best natural history collections in the state. If you have 3+ hours, the Boneyard Alaska story starts just north of town. See our Boneyard Alaska guide for that rabbit hole.
